What is Iniquity?

I used to think Iniquity and Sin were the same thing, but I watched a video by David Johnston called "Iniquity when man plays God" and my views have changed. The following are the notes i took from the video.

Sin is transgression of the Law (1 John 3:4-5) i.e. when you read thou shalt not steal and you go ahead and steal.
Iniquity however is the heart condition that wants us to make ourselves unequal with what we should be. To create an inequality. (Ezek 18:24-29)
Iniquity is what made Lucifer the devil (Ezek 28:14-15, Isa 14:12-15)
KJV contains the words Sin/Sins about 535 times, Iniquity/Iniquities about 314 times. Niv has Iniquity/Iniquties 25 times LIV bible 6 times NLT 4 times.



Jesus was wounded for our transgressions but he was also bruised for our iniquities (Isa 53:5-6). A bruise is internal bleeding, just like Inquity is from the inside, it is turning our own way. It occurs when you put your views and opinions above what God says in scripture.

Here are 20 Characteristics of Iniquity
1. Often religious Ecc 3:16, Isa 1:13, Mat 7:22-23, 13:25-41, 23:28 Act 8:18-23
2. It is hated by God Psa 5:5, 94:20, Isa 57:15, :17
3. Causes Covetousness Isa 57:17
4. It prevents us from kneeling or bowing down Psa 95:6-7
5. Lifts up self and puts down others Psa 36:2-4, 94:4-5
6. Appears to be Prosperous Psa 92:7-9
7. It causes a lack of restraint with children 1 Sam 3:13
8. It increases unto more iniquity Rom 6:19
9. It can be Inherited Exo 20:5-6
10. It can be contagious Gen 19:15
11. It causes a loss of first love Mat 24:12, Rev 2:4
12. A Cause of Divorce Isa 50:1
13. Causes conditions like Sodom Ezek 16:49-50
14. Prevents effective prayer  Psa 66:18, Isa 59:1-2
15. It makes a good person bad Ezek 28:14-15
16. Characteristic of being antichrist 2 Thess 2:3-7
17. Is behind all sin Jer 33:8-9
18. Is destructive Psa 107:17, Prov 5:22-23
19. Prevents fellowship Luke 18:11
20. Must be dealt with 2 Tim 2:19, Job 22:23, 36:10-11, Mic7:19, Act 3:26

It is doing our own will instead of God's will, another way to put it is Iniquity is the inner act of willfulness against God. It involves the attitudes of the heart.
