An In Depth Look at the The Word of God (updated)

For today's post I think that it'll be nice to cover some very important things that the bible tells us about itself or rather what God says about his word. So why is this subject so important I'll just list two reasons, for one Jesus is the foundation of our faith and wise people who hear his word and does it are likened to those who build their houses on a rock which is a firm foundation (Psa 11:3, Mat 7:24-5,  Luk 6:47-48, 1 Cor 3:11, Eph 2:20), how can we do what he says if we don't know what he said? Second the bible tells us that God has magnified his word even above his name (Psa 138:2). How are those for good reasons? Since this is such a vital topic we will be going over ten categories on this subject and including well over a hundred bible verses.

#1. Scripture Preservation

The first thing that we will talk about is how God promises to preserve his word for us. This is sooo important because without God's word how would we be able to distinguish truth from error? It is the word of the Lord that is right, all his works are done in truth. Let God be true and every man a liar (Psa 33:4, Rom 3:4).

We shouldn't think that God's pure perfect word is only in heaven and not available for us to read today, if Israel had it, shouldn't we expect God to give it to us also (Deu 30:11-14, Deu 29:29)?
There are many passages throughout the scriptures that speak about it's preservation, God preserves his word in order to protect the poor and needy from those that speak vanity and flattery
(Psa 12:1-7). It sure is comforting to know that God's counsel and the thoughts of his heart will always be here for us to know, his truth will endure to all generations (Psa 33:11, Psa 100:5). The second law of thermodynamics may apply to Heaven and Earth but not to God's word. Heaven and earth shall pass away but his words shall not pass away. The grass withereth and the flower fadeth but the word of the Lord shall stand forever (Isa 40:8, Mat 24:35, Mar 13:31, Luk 21;33, 1 Pet 1:23-25).

We know that the gospel is everlasting, see Rev 14:6. We also see another passage of scripture in Isaiah that informs us that his word shall not depart out of thy mouth nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of  thy seed's seed from hence forth and forever ( Isa 59:21). Jesus affirms that the scriptures cannot be broken in Joh 10:35, Paul affirms that they had the word of God (1 Thess 2:13).

#2 It's Role to Play in Salvation & The New Birth

Near the end of the gospel of Mark, Jesus instructs his disciples to Preach the gospel to every creature (Mar 16:15), now why did he do that? It is because he wants all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Tim 2:4). This is because we are saved by grace through faith (Eph 2:8-9), faith is the vessel in which grace is bestowed. Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Rom 10:17). We also see from 1 Thes 2:16 that the Jews were forbidding the early church from preaching to the gentiles that they might be saved, thus further showing how important it is to get the gospel out to the lost.

So what other passages of scripture show how necessary the word of God is for conversion/salvation?

You see, the law was our school master to bring us unto Christ, the scripture has concluded all under sin, the bible teaches that we are justified by faith  (Gal 3:21-25). When you go through the ten commandments with a lost person it shows them that they don't deserve heaven but a just God's wrath instead, it is when they humble themselves and realize this then grace can be extended to that person by their repentance and faith in Christ work on the cross as payment for our sins.

The parable of the sower shows us the different types of soil (men's hearts) that the seed (word of God) falls on and only the good soil which abides in Christ will bear fruit (luke 8:5-15, Joh 15:1-6).
Jesus tells his followers that they are clean through the word that he spoke unto them in  Joh 15:3. We have the conversion of the gentiles after hearing the gospel  in Acts 10:34-44. Paul tells Timothy in 1 Tim 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. 2 Tim 3:15 also affirms that the holy scriptures are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith in Christ. Eph 1:13 lays out the formula like this 1. hearing the word/gospel of salvation, 2.belief/trust, 3. Sealed with the holy Spirit of promise. So hearing the word must come first!

#3 From Whence Cometh It?

One of the biggest arguments people raise as to why they don't believe the bible is because they say it's written by mere men. prophecy came not by the will of men but holy men spake as they were moved by the holy Ghost (2Pe 1:20-21), it is not the word of men (1 Thes 2:13),  All scripture is given by inspiration of God (2 Tim 3:16), Jesus' words are spirit and life (Joh 6:63), God's word is truth (Joh 17:17). Indeed God was the one who gave the word, but great was the company of those that published it (Psa 68:11).

The fact of the matter is this, there is plenty of evidence that the bible is the word of God; Out of the Lord's mouth comes knowledge and understanding (Pro 2:6). However the word that is preached will not profit you if you don't have faith to mix with it (Heb 4:2).

#4 Some of It's Functions/Benefits

Too few people really grasp just how valuable, how precious, and how useful the word of God really is, Young men can cleanse their way by taking heed to it (Psa 119:9), They are profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness, so that we may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works (2 Tim 3:16-17).

Here is a small sample of what else the word of God does.
  • God used his word to make creation (Psa 33:6), In Gen 1 God said Let there be.. and it was so.
  • God heals people through his word (Psa 107:20, Mat 8:8).
  • We are to desire the sincere milk of the word in order to grow therebye (1 Pet 2:2).
  • Can be the cause of joy and rejoicing (Jer 15:16)
  • As well as comfort (Rom 15:4).
  • Jesus will smite the wicked/nations with the spirit/sword of his mouth (2 Thes 2:8, Rev 19:15)
  • Joh 15:7 God answers prayers of those who abide in Christ and his word abides in them.

If you turn to 2 Tim 4:2 It says to Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. Jesus also said to teach all nations to observe whatsoever that I have commanded you Mat 28:19-20.

#5 It's Value

In this section I just wanted to emphasize the importance of the word of God in our lives.
God is the source of all true wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. We cannot have logic without him. Because he loves us and wants us to have an intimite relationship with him he has given us his word for our benefit. The perfect man Job esteemed his words more than his necessary food (Job 23:12). They are said to be more superior than gold in several places in scripture including
Psa 19:10, Psa 119:72, and Psa 119:127. In Psalm 119:162 says I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.

Not many people will argue that our life is our most precious possession, even the devil admits this (Job 2:4). The wise and wealthy king Solomon tells us in Ecclesiastes 7:12 that wisdom gives life to those that hath it. Although we are not under the Old Covenant anymore the children of Israel are still are our examples and those things were written for our admonition (see 1 Cor 10:11), by looking at Dt 28 and Lev 26 we see the blessing of obedience vs the consequences of disobedience and thusly we should esteem God's word as most precious.

#6 What about Bible Perversion or Corruption and False Teachers?

There are those that state that the bible has been corrupted and that's why we can't trust it, well it turns out that they are only half right. The truth is there are some manuscripts or translations that have been corrupted but that doesn't mean that all or even most of them have been. It is evidently clear that Gods perfect word has been made available to much of the world, but men reject it. God warns us to not add or take from his word in passages such as Dt 4:2, Dt 12:32, Pro 30:6, & Rev 22:18-19. As believers we shouldn't be naïve to think that nobody would every try to misrepresent what God has said, God gives man free will and even in the scripture it mentions those that Pervert (Jer 23:36)  and corrupt ( 2 Cor 2:17) his word.

Paul tells us that if they or even an angel from heaven preach any other gospel than that which they preached unto them let that person be accursed (Gal 1:9), the bible also mentions those that wrest the scriptures unto their own destruction in 2 Pet 3:16, Peter informs us that no prophesy of scripture is  of any private interpretation (2Pet 1:20), Paul tells us to not be carried about with every wind of doctrine (eph 4:14), As Christians we should strive to be like those of Berea and search the scriptures daily to see if those things are so (Act 17:11), because the simple believes every word but the prudent looketh well to his going (pro 14:15). Remember that the spirits of the prophets are subject to prophets (1 Cor 14:32).

God tells us that heresy and sedition are works of the flesh that could keep you out of the kingdom if un-repented of in Gal 5:19-21, we are to reject heretics after the first and second admonition (Tit 3:10), There are many places in scripture that warn us of false prophets and teachers. In Mat 7:15 they are shown as wolves in sheep's clothing, and in Acts 20:29-31 the apostle Paul mourns because of those that would rise up and draw away disciples after them. Rom 16:17-18 tells us to mark and avoid those that cause divisions and offences contrary to sound doctrine, they serve their belly instead of Jesus and deceive the simple with good words and fair speeches. Those that consent not to the words of Christ and the doctrine which is according to godliness are proud and know nothing (1 Tim 6:3-5). Peter tells us that they would make merchandise of the people, bring in damnable heresies, and deny the Lord that bought them they will bring upon themselves swift destruction (2 Pet 2:1-3). John also warns us to test the spirits because many false prophets have gone out into the world (1 Joh 4:1).

So why are there so many false prophets/teachers out there? We'll it's because they don't have the Spirit of truth to guide them into all truth (Joh 16:13). It is the Holy Ghost which teaches you all things (Joh 14:26). Why don't they have the Spirit? Could it be because they have closed their eyes and that their ears are dull of hearing (Mat 13:15, Act 28:27), the god of this world has blinded them lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ should shine unto them (2cor 4:4). They need to ask God for wisdom, which is the fear of the Lord and have Jesus open their understanding (Jam 1:5, Pro 9:10, Luk 24:45). The natural man receiveth not the things of the spirit of God (1 Cor 2:14).

2Thes 2:12 tells us That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 2 Tim 3:7-8 let's us know that there would be those that resist the truth, have corrupt minds and are reprobate concerning the faith. It is quite tragic that there are people who are ever learning but never able to come unto the knowledge of the truth. Those that abide not in the doctrine of Christ hath not God and we are not to bid God speed or receive into our house those that do not have this doctrine (2 Joh 9-10).

#7 Types of Scripture

In this section I will be covering some of the different types of scripture. It is important to distinguish literal from symbolic verses and vice versa because this is how false doctrine creeps into the church. Note: some bible passages fit into more than one category.

Literal- These are bible verses that say what they mean, and are easy to understand.
Example: Luk 16:24  And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
Note: some people believe this passage is symbolic resulting in the false doctrine of soul sleep.

Symbolic- These are passages that read one way but require an interpretation in order to understand the meaning.
Example:Joh 6:53  Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
Note: Catholics teach this is literal, thus the false doctrine of transubstantiation is perpetuated.

OT- These are the bible verses that are written prior to Jesus' death on the Cross. These laws are not binding on Christians because we are under the New Covenant.
Example: Deu_14:8  And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.
Note: Some Christians preach that you must keep the OT laws to be saved or blessed such as not eating unclean animals, tithing, etc. This happens when you don't rightly divide scripture. Check out Hebrews 7, and Acts 15 & 21 for more about how we are not under the OT laws.

NT- These are the verses that appear after the crucifixion. Some of the OT laws are reiterated in the NT and are still binding on Christians such as thou shalt not kill, steal, commit adultery, aka the moral law.
Example:Eph_4:25  Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

Prophecy- These are some of the greatest examples that the bible is the word of God, this is when God foretells events that will happen in the future and then brings it to pass. I find the OT verses that prophesy about Jesus to be the most fascinating (Joh 5:39).
Example: Psa 22:18  They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

Genealogy- Bible passages that list who begat who. Especially important because it shows the lineage of the incarnation, and proves a young earth.
Example: Luk 3:34  Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor,

Commandments- These are God's orders to do or not do a particular thing.
Example: 1Co 14:39  Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

Historical- Bible verses that describe events that happened in the past. Quite a bit of which has been verified by archeology.
Example: Jos 6:20  So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

Scientific- Bible verses that contain scientific knowledge, much of which has only been recently verified by advancement in scientific discoveries.
Example:Lev_15:13  And when he that hath an issue is cleansed of his issue; then he shall number to himself seven days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in running water, and shall be clean.

Instructional- These are bible passages when someone is told how to do something such as how God told Noah to build the ark, how Israel was told to build the tabernacle, and how God told Israelites how to wage war and fight battles.
Example:Deu 20:12  And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:

#9 It's Part in Sanctification and Our Duty of Obedience.

While our Justification is the one-time instantaneous act of our being declared righteous and forgiven by God, our sanctification is a life-long process of being transformed into becoming more like Christ (Gal 4:19). Jesus Sanctifies and cleanses the church by the washing of water by the word (Eph 5:26-27). We are also told that we are sanctified by truth (which is God's word) in Joh17:17. A similar verse is found in John 8:32 which tells us that the truth shall set us free . The word of God not only sanctifies us but also our food when combined with prayer (1 Tim 4:4-5).

All throughout scripture we see that Sin is transgression of the law, and the wages thereof is death (1 Joh 3:4, Rom 6:23). Those that won't listen to the law can expect their prayer being an abomination (Pro 28:9). Jam 1:21-25 admonishes us to be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving our own selves, this way we can be blessed in our deed. Some people are afraid to read the book of Revelation because of all the terrifying things that happen in it, however the book of revelation tells us that those that readeth, as well as they that hear the words of this prophesy and keep the things contained therein are blessed (Rev 1:3).

When Jesus was tempted of the devil to turn the stones into bread he replies by referencing  Deu 8:3 and saying It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. (Mat 4:4, Luk 4:4). The psalmist king David wrote that he hid in God's word in his  heart that he might not sin against him (Psa 119:11). Joshua was told by God "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success." (Joshua 1:8).

Jesus told the Jews which believed on him in Joh 8:31, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed. Jesus likewise told his disciples If ye love me, keep my commandments in Joh 14:15. Jesus further states in Joh 14:23  Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

So how do we know that we know God? we know that we know him if we keep his commandments (1 Joh 2:3-4). It isn't hard to figure out that keeping the law make's one happy as  Pro 29:18 states. How true is it that God's word does good to him that walketh uprightly (Mic 2:7). 1 Joh 3:22 shows us that when we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing to him, God will give you what you ask for. We learn in the book of proverbs that the remembrance of the law and keeping of the commandments will lengthens days and give peace (Pro 3:2). Over and over again the scripture tells us things like Those who are blessed delight in God's law, and/or they meditate in it, and/or that they  keep it, etc (Psa 1:2-3, Luk 11:28).

On the other hand those that despise God's word will be destroyed (Pro 13:13). Just look at what happened to Jerusalem when Judah did it, can we say Fire (Amos 2:4-5). God made his own priests contemptible and base because they have caused people to stumble at the law and were partial in the law as well (Mal 2:8-9). Ezra 7:25-26 further describes punishment for not keeping the law.

We see from Pro 28:4 that Those that keep the law contend with the wicked, but those that forsake the law praise them. Rev 22:14 States  Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

#10 Miscellaneous

Here are some more things that the bible tells us about itself.

read...one fourth part of the day (Neh 9:3), His word will not return unto him void (Isa 55:11), It is likened to fire/hammer (Jer 23:29), famine of (Amo 8:11), word of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:19), It's the sword of the Spirit (Eph 6:17)), The Word of God is another name for Jesus (John 1:1, Rev 19:13). It is referred to as a shield and buckler (psa 91:4), God's word is pure/very pure (Pro 30:5, Psa 119:140), as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times (Psa 12:6), and is a lamp unto our feet, a light for our path (119:105).We know that the commandment is holy, just, and good from Rom 7:12. The law is good (Rom 7:16), in fact it's sweeter than honey (psa 119:103), quick, active, discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart (Heb 4:12), Judges those that reject Christ and don't receive his words (John 12:48). We are told to Let the word of Christ dwell in us richely in all wisdom in Col 3:16, and that Christ upholds all things by the word of his power (Heb 1:3).

So in conclusion, in God will I praise his word (Psa 56:10).

Thanks for Reading please share!!!

Bonus Verses: Neh 1:5-9, Neh 8:1-3, Neh 8:8, Neh 9:13, Psa 107:11-12,  Pro 7:1-3, Isa 8:20,  Luk 11:28, Rom 1:2, Rom 2:13,  Rom 16:25-26, 2 Cor 4:2, 1 Joh 3:9
