Hello again, it's Justin. For this article I'd like to discuss whether or not a Christian should watch anime; and in particular the tv show "Yu Yu Hakusho". The reason I bring this up is because I recently was getting ads for a Yu Yu Hakusho game that was (or is) releasing in 2025. How is this relevant. Well I used to be a big fan of the show and used to watch in well into my twenties, even a few years as a Christian.
What is Yu Yu Hakusho? You ask? It is a Japanese Anime that I started watching as a teenager over twenty years ago. I am now almost forty and havn't been watching it in over a decade. The show features a teen name Yusuke who after a near death experience became what's called a spirit detective. He and his buddy Kuwabara go about fighting demons; the show lasted four seasons. The duo are usually pared up with two demons named Hiei and Kurama. The former is a straight up demon, the other is a fox demon spirit inside of a human vessel, also it turns out that Yusuke himself is a descended of a demon so the only full blooded main hero in the show is Kuwabara. Yusuke got a significant amount if not all of his training from a psychic named Genkai.
So what is my goal of writing this article? You may be asking. It is to prove without a shadow of a doubt that God doesn't want his children to partake of this devious invention of man to subvert the minds of his followers. It is my firm conviction that this show is a gateway to the demonic and gives the devil legal ground to attack those that watch it. That's a hefty charge. You may think; and one I don't take lightly. I personally am well acquainted with the content of the series as well have been a Christian for about two decades. So this isn't my first rodeo, I know what I am talking about. I have decided to list ten scriptural reasons why any true follower of the Messiah Jesus wouldn't want anything to do with this show.
1. Christians NEED to understand that God not only cares what we do outwardly but judges our thought life and heart posture as well.
(1 Sam 16:7, Deut 5:21, Matt 5:28, Jer 7:24, Gen 6:5-6)
2. Christian's are to be salt and light not lukewarm.
(Matt 5:13, Mat 5:14, Mat 6:22-23, Luke 10:27, Rev 3:16,)
3. The show is grotesque and dark.
(Philippians 4:8, Psa 101:3, 2 Corinthians 6:14)
4. The show has the main character seeking after a psychic.
(Lev 20:6, 1 Chron 10:13)
5. The "good guys" of the show are in some form or another demons.
(Matthew 12:26, 2 Cor 6;15, 1 Cor 10:20-21)
6. The show possibly mocks Christ by having a underworld ruler/judge named Koenma who is portrayed like a baby Jesus or something (he also has a teenager form). He isn't particularly strong, but has the power to resurrect people with his binky. He also has a scary father which is kinda like how unbelievers see Jesus as loving and merciful but has a wrathful Father.
7. This show show's sympathy for demons making it seem like they have to eat humans to survive, when that is not true doctrine. Demons do not eat human flesh in order to survive, they can inhabit human bodies and desire to sin through them; there ultimate goal is to get as many people to hell as possible.
(Luke 4:33, 1 Thess 3:5, John 10:10)
8. Double minded is wrong.
(James 1:8, James 4:8)
9. Enlisting the aid of demons is witchcraft, which is condemned in scripture.
(Gal 5:19-21, Deut 18:10-12).
10. This show is of the world and will pass away: Christians are called to NOT love the world but do the will of God.
(1 John 2:15-17, Romans 12:2)
