Right now I would like to go over some bible passages that talk about the terrible sin of lying. First off, It's great to know that God can't lie (Tit 1:2, Heb 6:18). This is foundational to the Christian's faith, for if God could lie we wouldn't be able to trust his word the bible.
Scripture admonishes us to tell the truth always (Exo 20:16, 23:1,
Lev 19:11, Deu 5:20, Zec 8:16, Rom 13:9, Eph 4:25, Col 3:9, Tit 2:3). The only possible exception to this is lying in order to save life (see exodus ch1 and joshua ch. 2). Because God is just and good he will punish those who disobey this command. What kind of punishment? you ask. Having the thing done to him as he would have done to the other
(Deu 19:19), having the mouth of them that speak lies be stopped
(Psa 31:18, 63:11), not dwelling in God's house/ tarring in his sight
(Psa 101:7), mouth filled with gravel Pro 20:17, death (Pro 21:6, Rom 6:2-3), land mourneth and those that dwell therein languish (Hos 4:2-3), A curse that consumes the house (Zec 5:3-4), Slain by parents (Zec 13:3), and ultimately being cast into the lake of Fire
(Rev 21:8).
Some examples from scripture of people who have lied include the Devil who is the father of lies (Gen 3:4, Joh 8:44), Sarah (Gen 18:15), Jacob (Gen 27:19), the ambassadors of Gibeon (Josh 9:3-6), Samson (Jdg 16:13, the old prophet (1 Kin 13:11, 18, children of Belial 1 Kin 21:13, Gehazi 2 Kin 5:25, those who bore false witness against Jesus (Mat 26:59-60, Mar 14:56), and Ananias (Act 5:3).
Scripture teaches us to always take God's word over mans (Rom 3:4). Who else are considered liars according to Scripture? Those that say they have no sin (1 Joh 1:8), Professing Christians who don't keep his commandments (1 Jo 2:4), those that deny Jesus is the Christ (1 Joh 2:22), and those that claim to love God but hate their brother (1 Joh 4:20).
In conclusion scripture is clear that lying lips/tongue are an abomination to the Lord (Pro 6:16-17). I would rather lose my Job than lie (Pro 19:22), in fact lying to someone is a sure sign you hate them (Pro 26:28). In contrast it is a sign that you are one of God's people if you refuse to Lie (Isa 63:8).
It is a stupid thing to do especially considering the truth will come out eventually (Mat 10:26, Luk 8:17. Finally we as Christians should stick close to the word of God so as to not be deceived by evil men, vain words, philosophy, tradition of men, rudiments of the world, etc (Eph 5:6, Col 2:8, 2 Tim 3:13).
