In this post I will be discussing some points that the bible makes that I believe one should strongly consider before reaching a final decision on whether or not to go to college.
First let me start off by saying that I'm not against people going to collage, if there is a certain career path that they really want to do. I think it's great that people want to learn and expand their knowledge. However one must be aware that there are some pitfalls that go along with attending a university, lets take a look at a few.
The bible says " Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly,..." (Psa 1:1). We are certainly aware that there is an abundance of ungodly counsel going around in colleges all across the nation, that is with the widespread teaching of evolutioinism running rampant in our schools. Scripture admonishes us not to give heed to these cunningly devised fables (1Tim 1:4, 2 Tim 4:3 -4, 2Pe 1:16) or oppositions of falsely so called science (1 Tim 6:20). We are also instructed to not be carried about with every wind of doctrine (Eph 4:14), and to beware because of those who would try and spoil us through philosophy (Col 2:8). As Christians we should be wise to that which is good and simple concerning evil (Rom 16:19).
The next thing that I want to go over is the evolution professors. They do not posses true wisdom which begins with the fear of the Lord (Pro 1:7), instead they posses what is referred to as the wisdom of the world and we are not to put our faith in them (1 Cor 2:4-6). Those that deny God do not do so for intellectual reasons but rather because they love their sin and do not want to give it up (Joh 3:19-21, Rom 1:18 -25, 2Th 2:10-12). It truly is amazing how we can see scripture fulfilled before our very eyes, how we have God destroying the wisdom of the wise, bringing to nothing the understanding of the prudent an making foolish the wisdom of this world (Isa 44:25, 1Co 1:18-21). For nearly two thousand years scripture has foretold of these stubborn men who are willingly ignorant of the fact of a global flood and hold to a view of uniformitarianism when they try and date the age of the earth (2 Pet 3:3 -7). It is truly a shame that they are ever learning but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth (2Tim 3:7 ).
Another thing that you have to consider is the enormous amount of debt that many go under in order to get their degree, such a large amount of which are never able to pay it back. It is the wicked that borrows and doesn't repay (Psa 37:21, Eze 18:7), in fact we shouldn't go in debt for any reason (Rom 13:8). We should also question our motivation as to why we are going to college in the first place. Is it because we trust in or are deceived by riches?
(Mat 13:22, Mar 10:23 -25). Indeed if you spend your whole life pursuing the things of the world yet die without Christ, you've gained nothing (Pro 13:7, Pro 28:6, Mar 8:35).
Here are some other points to consider. Who are you keeping company with? (Pro 13:20, 2Co 6:14 -17). We need to be on guard against pride the more we grow in knowledge (1 Co 8:1 -2). If you are looking for wisdom have you prayed to God about it? (Jas 1:5).
In conclusion, although there are some dangers that go along with collage I want the reader to understand I'm not trying to scare you away from continuing your education. There are plenty of alternative options for higher learning such as Christian and trade schools, furthermore you can save alot of money by taking online courses, some of which cost only a few hundred dollar. Lastly, I just want to say that I understand if a man who wants to go to school so he can provide for his family (1 Tim 5:8) and let his wife stay home with the kids. That is because I know how hard it is to get by on one income, in an economy that is tailored to households with multiple incomes or higher paying jobs.
