Today I thought I would write a small post about a little known cult that was founded in the mid 1980's called The Order of the Solar Temple. The Order was founded by two men in 1984 named Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret . This cult based it's ideals on the medieval Knights Templar.
So what did the members of this secret society believe? Well according to Peronnik (Robert Chabrier) he wrote in his book that their goals were to establish the correct notions of power/authority in the world, to affirm the primacy of spiritual over the temporal, they also claimed to be preparing for the second coming of Christ and called him the "Solar God-King"; as well as aimed to unite all Christians churches and Islam.
One red flag that should go up in the mind of any believer in Christ is that they drew some inspiration for their teachings from British occultist Aleister Crowely; who ran the Order of the Eastern Temple from the early 1920's to the late 1940's.
They had lodges in Martinique, Australia, Switzerland, as well as other places. Their activities were supposedly a mix of New age, UFO religion, and early Christian identity; with variously adapted Freemason rituals thrown in. The lodges contained rituals, costumes, and alters. During their ceremonies they wore crusader type apparel and held a sword.
Things took a turn for the worse when they murdered Tony Dutoit's baby in 1994 because they thought he was the anti-Christ, this was followed by a wave of mass suicides and murders.
What strikes me as strange is that they thought they could stop the Anti-Christ from coming, as if they could prove the bible wrong (Mar 14:49, Joh 10:35, 2 Cor 13:8). That would be like calling God a liar.
I would just like to conclude by saying that whether this was an actual cult or was just a made up story we should always be on guard against those that would try and deceive us. We can do this by studying the scripture and asking God's to give us wisdom (Jam 1:5). It is clear that if this story is indeed true and they did commit murder then we know that they were on the wrong path and did not know Christ (1 Joh 2:4, 1 Joh 3:15).
