A Study On Children, Childbirth, and Rearing

For today's post I will be going over passages of the bible that mention children . There will be passages about specific women in the bible who gave birth, instructions on how you should raise your kids, and much much more.

Verses on Motherhood, Childbirth and Pregnancy

Specific Women
First off we see by reading Gen 3:20, Gen 4:1-2 & 25 that Adams wife Eve is considered the mother of all living and that she personally bare Cain, Abel, and Seth. The next popular mother mentioned in the bible is Sarah (Gen 21:1-3), who bared Isaac when she was 90 years old (Gen 17:17). Then there's Rebekah, who's twins struggled together in the womb and Jacob's hand took Esau's heel (Gen 25:21-26). When we come to Jacob we see that he had four wives and 12 sons. The Lord gave Leah six kids because she was hated whilst the loved wife Rachael only had two. (Gen 29:31-35, Gen 30:1-24, Gen 35:16 -19).

There's the story of Tamar who had twins in her womb and the unusual instance with the scarlet thread (Gen 38:24-30). Phineha's wife delivered Ichabod around the time that the Ark was stolen (1Sa 4:19 -22), the details on the most important birth in history is recorded in Mat 1:18-25 where we see that a virgin conceived a child (Jesus our Saviour) by the Holy Ghost, and we see that Elisabeth's husband was a mute until his son was named because he believed not the angels tidings (Luk 1:13-20 & 1:57-64).

Passages about Travail
If there's one thing we know about giving birth it's that it's painful and that it's hard. We see the reason for this is because this was Eve's punishment for eating the forbidden fruit (Gen 3:16), it is the woman's part of the curse. Time and again in scripture we read of certain instances where trouble will come upon men or people as a woman in travail (Psa 48:6, Jer 6:24, Jer 13:21, Jer 22:23, Jer 30:6, Mic 4:9, 1Th 5:3), this just goes to show they definitely won't be having a good time!

Miscarriage, Etc
Among the many things the bible talks about, miscarriage is also addressed in the holy scriptures. We see that both Jeremiah and Job lamented that they were even born in Job 3:10-12 and Jer 20:14-18 . Solomon shows us in Ecc 6:2-6 that a untimely birth (miscarriage?) is better than a man who hasn't seen any good nor had a burial, even if he lived two thousand years.

Instructions on How to Raise Your Child

In this section we will be going to the scriptures to see some advice on how to properly up-bring our kids. Most children nowadays are sent to public schools for their education. This has resulted in them being indoctrinated in the religion of evolution, and they usually pick up how to cuss, do drugs, and be promiscuous from this environment as well. I would greatly dread being one of the evolutionary professors or other people who is a bad influence in a child's life as those that offend little ones that believe in Jesus are better off with a milestone tied to their neck and being cast into the sea (Mat 18:6, Mar 9:42, Luk 17:2).

According to scripture it is the parents job to teach their children and be a godly example to them in the home, fathers are to raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Deu 4:9, Deu 6:6-9, Eph 6:1 -4, Psa 34:11). The reason why God made man and wife one flesh is so that they would produce godly offspring (Mal 2:15), and as statistics show secular education cannot produce this.

In regards to discipline it is no wonder that the world teaches parents to not spank their children as this goes contrary to the word of God. When an unrepentant and rebellious child does wrong they should be spanked, spanking your child is a sign that you love them because it teaches them that there are serious consequences for their behavior (Pro 13:24, Pro 19:18, Pro 22:15, Pro 23:13 -14, Pro 29:15, Pro 29:17, Heb 12:7-11). After all, you don't want a foolish son (Pro 17:21, Pro 17:25).

The bible also teaches that parents are to provide for their children (Pro 13:22, 2Co 12:14, 1Tim 5:8), however even non Christians do this and even go too far and spend way to much on their kids to their detriment. This is because it teaches kids to be selfish and to lay up treasures here on earth instead of heaven (Mat 6:19-20).

One of the qualifications for a bishop or elder is that they rule their houses well, in other words not have unruly children (1Ti 3:4, Tit 1:6). It is taught in many passages of scripture that children are to honour their parents including in Mat 15:4, see also Deu 27:16 and Rom 1:30. Not only are children taught to obey their parents but fathers are told not to provoke their children to anger as well (Col 3:20 -21).

The Bible and The Fatherless

Ok, so here is a short rundown of some of the things the bible tells us about the fatherless.

God warns his people in the OT not to afflict any fatherless child for if they do and the fatherless cries unto God, then God will kill them with the sword (Exo 22:22-24). In regards to Israels farming habits, they were to not to go back and get that sheaf that they forgot or go over the olive tree boughs twice but leave them for the fatherless and others (Deu 24:19-20).

The book of Psalms tells us that God is a father to the fatherless (Psa 68:5), he tells the unjust judges to defend the poor and fatherless in Psa 82:3, and we see that the LORD relieves the fatherless in Psa 146:9. We know that visiting the fatherless in their affliction is one of the things that make up pure religion as shown in Jas 1:27.

Verses About The Blessing Or The Loss of Children

In 2Ki 2:23 -24 we read of the account of forty two children that were mauled by bears because they mocked the prophet Elisha.

In the modern age many women consider children to be a curse, burden, or at the very least an inconvenience. They also have a tendency to have the least amount of kids possible and have them later in life. Men and Women today have lost the biblical view that children are in fact a reward from God (Psa 127:3 -5). Indeed, we see from passages such as Gen 1:28, Gen 9:1, and 1Tim 5:14 that it's God's will for married people to have kids.

We also read of the loss of children as the result of such wickedness as sorcery and enchantment in Isa 47:9. The prophecy of Rachel weeping for her children (Jer 31:15) was fulfilled in Mat 2:16-18 when Herod had all the children slain in Bethlehem and it's coasts from two years and younger.

Do Little Children Go to Heaven?

In regards to the age of accountability i do not believe there is any set age in which children are guaranteed heaven, It is my personal conviction that little children who do not know that they have sinned go to heaven. Jesus told his disciples to suffer little children to come to him and to forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God (Mar 10:13  -16, Luk 18:15 -17), he also taught that unless we are converted and become like little children we will not enter the kingdom of heaven (Mat 18:2 -5).

We see from reading Deu 1:39 that little kids don't know good and evil and by reading the book of Romans that Paul didn't die spiritually (separation from God) until he knew the law (Rom 7:9-11). See also Rom 2:14-15.

Other Passages about Children/Childbirth

We see by reading Gen 20:18 that God is in control of whether or not a woman is barren, yeah it is the Lord that makes us in our mother's womb (Psa 139:13 -16, Ecc 11:5, Isa 29:23, Jer 1:5). In Exo 1:15 -17 we read that the midwives of the Hebrews were ordered to kill the male children. Exo 13:12 -15 is about how the Israelites were to sacrifice all the firstborn male beasts to the Lord, but to redeem their firstborn children. Lev 12 is about the ceremonial purification rituals for woman who has born a child.

We see by reading Deut 2:16 and Jer 31:29-30 that the children were not to be put to death for their father's sin/iniquity and vice versa, this is especially important for the topic of rape and abortion. In 2 Sam 12 we read that David's child from Bathsheba died because of David's sin. 1 Kin 3:17-27 is the story of the two harlots who both claimed to be the mother of a baby, and it shows how Solomon wisely settled the dispute.

The bible also speaks of a time in the future when a child will lead such animals and a wolf, lion, as well as a leopard; and that a suckling child will play on the hole of the asp (Isa 11:6-8). This is certainly a different thing then what we experience today. Furthermore when Jesus makes a new heaven and new earth people will be living for a lot longer than they do today as we see by Isa 65:20 that a child will die at a hundred years old.

We learn from Isa 56:4-5 that God promises to give an everlasting name to the Eunuchs who take hold of his covenant and do the things that please him; giving them a name better than that of sons and daughters.

The last three OT verses that I want to talk about today is found in the books of Psalms, Isaiah, and Malachi. In Psa 103:13 we see how the Lord pities those that fear him like a father pitying his children.

According to at least two verses in the bible there are more children born to the desolate than to the married wife (Isa 54:1, Gal 4:27), I wonder if this is literal or something else. Mal 4:6 is the verse about the hearts of the children being turned to the fathers and vice versa.

1Co 13:11 is a verse about maturity or growing up.
1Ti 2:15 is a bible verse that some may misinterpret to mean that a women needs to make babies in order to go to heaven.
We learn in Heb 11:11 -12 that is was through faith that Sarah was able to bear a child even though she was very old.

Rev 12:1-5 tells us of a woman who was clothed with the sun, the moon was under her feet and she had a twelve star crown, and she was with child. There also was a seven headed dragon who desired to devour the child as soon as it was born. I believe the identity of the child is Jesus while the dragon represents Satan see Rev 19:15 and Rev 12:9.

In closing I just want to say that since we are on the topic of pregnancy, children, and birth; I want to ask the reader are you born again? Jesus told Nicodemus that unless a man is born again (of water and the Spirit) he cannot see the kingdom of God  (Joh 3:3 -7). Those that believe on Jesus become the sons of God and are born again by the word of God (Joh 1:12 -13, 1Pe 1:23), and lastly as newborn babes in Christ should desire the milk of  the word in order to grow as a believer.
