There are many people in the world today who claim to believe in God, or a god, or some higher power out there. The question then arises, just who is this God who made the universe? What is he like? What can we as finite beings know about him? While there is some things about God that are mysterious (Isa 55:8 -9), there are also several things that we can know about him if we know where to look. So without further ado let's go to the one source we can rely on to tell us just who God is and what is he like.
God is Omnipotent!
The first of God's attributes that we are going to look at today is God's omnipotence. Omnipotence simple means all powerful, he is by far the mightiest being who has or ever will exist. God's power is demonstrated through the fact that he created the heavens and the earth (Gen 1:1, Psa 102:25). When Job replied to the Lord he testified to God's omnipotence when he said "thou canst do every thing" (Job 42:2). Unlike us mortal men God doesn't faint or get weary (Isa 40:28). Another great verse that shows God's omnipotence is Luk 1:37, which let's us know that nothing's impossible with God. Lastly, the bible even uses the word omnipotent when describing God (Rev 19:6). God is Omnipresent!
Omnipresent means that you are everywhere all at the same time. Since God made space and time he is not bound by it and therefore he can be everywhere at once. Let's see some bible verses that prove that God is omnipresent. The first instance that shows God's omnipresence that we will cover is in 2Ch 2:6 where Solomon states that the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him.
Scripture also teaches us that the Lord's eyes go throughout all the earth so that he can help those who's heart is perfect towards him (2Ch 16:9, Zec 4:10). This is reiterated in Pro 15:3, which informs us that God's eyes are in every place and that they behold both the evil and the good. In the book of Jeremiah we have God asking the rhetorical question of whether someone could hide where he couldn't see them, and doesn't he fill heaven and earth (Jer 23:23 -24). See also (Psa 139:7 -12, Heb 4:13 )
God is Omniscient
Omniscient means all knowing. In other words there is nothing that God doesn't know. There are several passages that show that God not only see's what happens on the exterior but that he even knows our thoughts (1Sa 16:7, 1Ch 28:9, 2Ch 6:30, Job 42:2, Eze 11:5). The bible even declares his understanding as infinite (Psa 147:5), meaning there is no limit to what he knows. One way that we can know that Jesus is God is that he knew what was in the scribes hearts when they thought within themselves that he blasphemed (Mat 9:4). Jesus also knew the future as he told Peter that he would deny him three times before the cock crew (Mat 26:34). See also (Isa 40:28).
God is Eternal
To be eternal means to have no beginning or ending. Those who profess atheism often ask what caused God? This is often in response to when a creationist tells them that the universe had a beginning and therefore a cause, and that God caused the universe. What some atheist fail to realize whether intentionally or not is that God doesn't need a cause because he had no beginning.
Here is a short list of scriptures that support the fact that God is eternal (Psa 90:2, Psa 93:2, Psa 102:26-27, Psa 103:17, Isa 40:28
Mic 5:2, Joh 8:58, Heb 1:12).
God's Character
OK, so far we found out that God is the Strongest, Smartest, guy there is and that you can't escape his presence. We also just saw that there was never a time when he didn't exist, but what about his character? How does God treat people? Is he nice or mean? Well it turns out that the God of scripture is the embodiment of ultimate goodness. What do I mean by that? He is where we get our morals from. Let's see what we can find out about God's character from the scriptures.
Exo 34:6 tells us several things about God's character namely that he is merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth. God is also a jealous god, he doesn't want you to go around worshiping things other than him ((Exo 34:14, Deu 4:24). The bible also teaches us that God is holy, and that he expects us to be holy also (Lev 19:2, Eph 1:4, 1 Pet 1:15-16, Rev 4:8). The Scripture also teaches us that God is no respecter of persons and you cannot bribe him (Deu 10:17, Act 10:34, Rom 2:11). God is without iniquity and cannot be tempted with evil (Deu 32:4, 2Ch 19:7, Jas 1:13).
Another attribute of God is that he hates all workers of iniquity and that he is angry with the wicked everyday (Psa 5:5, Psa 7:11). While some bible skeptics may think this makes God cruel this is certainly not the case! God tells us that he doesn't take pleasure in the death of the wicked but that he desires them to turn from their evil ways and live (Eze 33:11). This makes perfect sense because God is Good (Psa 25:8, Nah 1:7, Luk 18:19). It is also true that God hears those that are righteous (Psa 34:15, Joh 9:31). Not only is God good, but he is also full of compassion and good to all (Psa 145:8 -9). Just think about it, God does good to the wicked and to the righteous; we are to love our enemies and do good to them as well (Mat 5:44-48).
As loving and merciful as God is he is also a God of judgment and will render to every man according to his deeds (Isa 61:8, Rom 2:6-10, 2Sa 22:26-27). He is righteous in all his works (Dan 9:14, Hos 14:9), we are wrong if we would say that God shouldn't have done this or that. To God belongs vengeance, we are not to take vengeance ourselves (Psa 94:1, Nah 1:2, Rom 12:19, Heb 10:30). Although he is slow to anger he will not acquit the wicked (Nah 1:3, Exo 34:7).
One of the most important attributes of God in my opinion is the fact that God cannot lie (Tit 1:2, Heb 6:18). This means that we can trust him to the uttermost and look to him as the ultimate standard of truth (Joh 14:6). The last thing about God's character that I desire to mention is that God is love (1Jn 4:8). His love for us was so great that he gave his only begotten Son so we could be with him forever (Joh 3:16). See also (Num 23:19, Psa 33:5, Pro 11:1, Pro 17:15).
A Few More Things About God
So is there anything else that we can learn from the bible about God? Yes, there is a-lot more that you can learn about God from the bible but for the sake of brevity I'm only going to cover a few more things. In terms of God's appearance the sight of the glory of the Lord that abode upon mount Sinai what as the appearance of fire in the eyes of the children of Israel (Exo 24:17). The bible also teaches us that he is to be feared above all gods (Psa 96:4).
With the exception of when he became flesh and dwelt among us, God doesn't sleep (Psa 121:3-4).
God's greatness is unsearchable (Psa 145:3). There was no God formed before or after him (Isa 43:10). The bible teaches monotheism that is the belief that there is only one true God. Please refer to my post on Mormonism for more verses on that.
God is light (Isa 60:19-20, 1 Joh 1:5, Rev 21:23). God's voice sounds like great/many waters (Eze 1:24, Eze 43:2, Rev 1:15). God does not change (Hab 3:6, Mal 3:6, Heb 13:8). The bible also tells us that God is a Spirit (Joh 4:24). He doesn't dwell in temples made with hands (Act 17:24). Lastly our God is a consuming fire
(Heb 12:29). See also (Psa 145:16 -20, Eze 1:27 -28).
In conclusion the bible tells us many interesting things about God, which is why it's so important for Christians to read their bibles. As we study the scriptures we will learn more and more about God and truth in general. One way to know if someone is born again is if they love God (Eph 6:24, Joh 14:21-23, Act 5:32, Rom 8:9, 1 Cor 16:22, 1 Joh 5:3), and if they love God why wouldn't they want to get to know him more by reading scripture?
