Why the Contemporary English Version is a Poor Translation

Well hello again. In today's article I'm going to be checking out the CEV. The Complete CEV bible was published in 1995, it is of the Dynamic Equivalence type. What follows are dozens of verses exposing the differences between the KJV & the CEV. I apologize in advance for not coloring the verses as I wanted to release this article asap. As usual I will list the KJV first then follow with the newer bible. I hope y'all enjoy this piece.

Scripture quotations marked (CEV) are from the Contemporary English Version Copyright © 1991, 1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

Gen 4:24  If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
Genesis 4:24 "...punished ten times more..." (CEV)
77 fold is eleven times more.

Gen 12:6  And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.
Gen 12:6 "...the sacred tree..."(CEV)
The are several pagan cultures that have worshiped tree's; The Judaic/Christian religion shouldn't be one of them.

Gen 21:9  And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.
Gen 21:9 "...playing..."(CEV)
This newer translation sure portrays Ishmael in a more positive light than the KJV as to mock someone is much crueler than to play with them. (see Gal 4:29).

Exo 4:25  Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.
Exo 4:26  So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision.
Exodus 4:25,26"..."My dear son, this blood will protect you." So the Lord did not harm Moses..."(CEV)
Wait..What!?! So who was it that was protected, the child or Moses?

Exo 32:25  And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)
Exo 32:25 "...made fools of themselves in front of their..."(CEV)
This translation forgets to mention that they were naked in this passage.

Lev 4:3  If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the LORD for a sin offering.
Leviticus 4:3 "When the high priest sins, he makes everyone else guilty..."(CEV)
Where did they come up with that?

Lev 16:26  And he that let go the goat for the scapegoat shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward come into the camp.
Levi 16:26 "...sent...to the demon..."(CEV)
This is a very strange rendering of the text. Why would God have instructed Israel to have made an offering to a demon. It's very confusing indeed to have a translation in which sacrifices to demons is both condoned and condemned. I believe that would be a contradiction. Perhaps I'm just missing something here. I'm not going to spell the demon name.
(see Exo 22:20).

Lev 19:29  Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness.
Lev 21:7  They shall not take a wife that is a whore, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband: for he is holy unto his God.
Levi 19:29, 21:7 "...temple prostitute..."(CEV)
Lev 21:14  A widow, or a divorced woman, or profane, or an harlot, these shall he not take: but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife.
Lev 21:14 "...temple prostitute."(CEV)
Does God condemn prostitution in General or only religious prostitution?

Deu 4:19  And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.
Deuteronomy 4:19 "...LORD put them there for all the other nations to worship."(CEV)
It seems that this verse was written by a Calvanist. I say that because it implies that God wanted those nations to sin by committing Idolatry. We know though that God doesn't want anybody to sin (Eze 33:11).

Jos 8:18  And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.
Joshua 8:18 "...sword..."(CEV)
Wrong type of weapon.

Rth 1:17  Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
Ruth 1:17 "...even by death!" (CEV)
This makes no sense since death means separation.

Rth 2:7  And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves: so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the house.
Ruth 2:7 "...without a moment's rest."(CEV)
Opposite meaning.

1Sa 5:6  But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
1Sa 5:9  And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
1 Samuel 5:6 "...all over their bodies..."(CEV)
Or is it on their secret parts?

2Sa 12:30  And he took their king's crown from off his head, the weight whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance.
2 Sam 12:30 "...statue of their god Milcom..."(CEV)
This means that David violated God's command in Deut 7:25, but scripture declares that this is definitely not the case (1 Kin 15:5). If you turn to 1Chro 20:2 we see that it was, in fact the kings crown and not the idols'.

1Ki 8:39  Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)
1 King 8:39 removed the thou only part. This is important because this is a unique attribute that only God has!

Job 3:17  There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.
Job 3:17 "...the wicked...rest..."(CEV)
Do they? (see Heb 4:1, Rev 14:11) So I guess the authors don't believe in hell then?

Psa 34:20  He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.
Psalm 34:20 "...their bones..."(CEV)
Messes up the prophecy of John 19:32-6.

Pro 14:4  Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.
Pro 14:4 "Without the help of an ox there can be no crop..."(CEV)
Changes the text as well as the meaning.

Pro 16:31  The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.
Pro 16:31 removed the conditional "if"

Pro 18:24  A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Pro 18:24 "Some friends don't help..."(CEV)

Pro 23:25  Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.
Pro 23:25 "Make your parents proud,...especially...mother."(CEV)
This seems to be a pretty common change in newer versions, (that is the use of the word pride/proud, in an positive manner.

Pro 29:21  He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length.
Pro 29:21 "Slaves...treat kindly...will cause you sorrow."(CEV)
This translation  actually changed the text to encourage the mistreatment of slaves, how absurd!!

Pro 30:4  Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?
Pro 30:4 "...tell me their names...children's names."(CEV)
Another reference to Jesus (God the Son) annihilated.

Pro 30:28  The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces.
Pro 30:28 "...lizards..."(CEV)
Should say spider.

Ecc 1:2  Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
Ecclesiastes 1:2  "...nothing makes sense!" (CEV)

Ecc 2:26  For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
2:26 "...This makes no more sense than chasing the..."(CEV)
If the wisest man in the bible besides Jesus didn't get it what chance do we have? (1 Kings 3:12).

Ecc 3:12  I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life.
Ecc 3:12 leaves out .."to do good"

Ecc 5:6  Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?
Ecc 5:6 changes angel to "worship leader"(CEV)

Ecc 6:1  There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:
Ecc 6:2  A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
Ecc 6:1,2 "...God doesn't let you enjoy it...terribly unfair!"(CEV)
God's not fair what about (Rom 2:6, Eph 6:9, 1Pe 1:17)

Son 1:12  While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof.
Song of Solomon 1:12 "...my aroma was a magic charm."(CEV)
What does the bible say about called good evil? (Isa 5:20)

Isa 3:1  For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water,
Isa 3:2  The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient,
Isa 3:3  The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator.
Isaiah 3:1-3 "...LORD...going to take away...everything you need...fortune tellers..."(CEV)
Nobody needs fortune tellers, they are a problem. They bring trouble. We are all better off without them. It's almost like this translation has the LORD endorsing fortune tellers.

Isa 11:4  But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
Isa 11:4 removes "..breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked"
(2 Thess 2:8, Rev 19:15, Rev 19:21)

Isa 28:10  For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
Isa 28:11  For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
Isa 28:12  To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
Isa 28:13  But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
Isa 28:10-13 precept changed to "senseless sound" and stammering lips to "strange sounds"(CEV)

Isa 39:7  And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.
Isa 39:7 "...disgraced..."(CEV)
You lose a little meaning of the text, namely that they'll be eunuchs.

Isa 46:13  I bring near my righteousness; it shall not be far off, and my salvation shall not tarry: and I will place salvation in Zion for Israel my glory.
Isa 46:13 "...I take pride in Israel..."(CEV)

Jer 9:3  And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD.
Jeremiah 9:3 "...With each dishonest deed their power increases..."(CEV)

Jer 9:25  Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised;
Jer 9:26  Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.
Jer 9:25,26 "...nations...Judah...circumcised..."(CEV)
KJV says that they are uncircumcised!

Jer 10:15  They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
Jer 10:15 "Idols are..a Joke..."
There's nothing funny about people being decieved and on their way to hell. Idol are however vain in that they cannot help those that worship them.

Jer 16:2  Thou shalt not take thee a wife, neither shalt thou have sons or daughters in this place.
Jer 16:2 "...don't get married..."(CEV)
Did God tell Jeremiah not to get married period or not to get married in this place?

Lam 3:3  Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.
Lamentations 3:3 "I am the only one he punishes over and over again, without ever stopping."
Not only is this not what the text actually says but we know this to be an untrue statement by the fact that there will be multitudes burning forever in the lake of fire.

Lam 4:3  Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.
Lam 4:3 "...jackels..."(CEV)

Dan 8:25  And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.
Daniel 8:25 removes "by peace" and "without hand"

Dan 12:1  And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
Dan 12:1 changes delivered to "protected"(CEV)
This change is especially significant if you believe in the Pre-trib rapture as I do.

Hos 13:9  O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help.
Hos 13:9 "...you are done for. Don't expect help from me."(CEV)
Has the opposite meaning than the KJV. Check out the next passage that I cover to see which one's right.

Hos 13:14  I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.
Hos 13:14 "...I call death and the grave to strike you..."(CEV)
Wrong !!! God will redeem them from death and ransom them from the power of the grave, God will be death's plagues and the graves destruction; see 1 Cor 15:54-55 for proof that the KJV text is right.

Amos 4:5 removes with leaven
Leaven in the bible is likened to hypocrisy and sin
(Luk 12:1, 1 Cor 5:6-8)

Amo 5:9  That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress.
Amos 5:9 "God destroys mighty soldiers and strong..."(CEV)
They're missing the part about how God strengthens the spoiled in order to do this.

Zep 2:3  Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD'S anger.
Zephaniah 2:3 "...then come and worship him..." (CEV)
I'm sure this change in the text could greatly benefit those people who think you must go to a church building to have a good relationship with God.

Zep 3:9  For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.
Zeph 3:9 "...languages..."(CEV)
I personally believe the Lord will change all the earth's speaking back to one language; like before the tower of babel. That's when tongues will cease (1 Cor 13).

Mal 2:16  For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.
Malachi 2:16 "...God...hates anyone who...divorce his..."(CEV)
The text of this passage actually is telling us that God hates the putting away, it is not telling us that God is hating the one doing the action.

Mar 10:40  But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.
Mark 10:40 adds "...This is for God to decide."(CEV)
Kinda useful for JW's who want to claim Jesus isn't Divine. It's never good to add to the text like that.

Luk 4:44  And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
Luke 4:44 changes Galilee to "Judea"(CEV)

Joh 6:63  It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
John 6:63 "...Human strength..."(CEV)
Why did they change the flesh into human strength? I'm guessing it's because the flesh in this verse proves that eating Jesus literally body during the catholic mass would do you no good.

Act 5:11  And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
Acts 5:11 "The church members were afraid..."   (CEV)

Act 11:22  Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch.
Act 11:22 "News of what was happening reached the church..."(CEV)
The way that the last two passages are phrased makes it harder to explain that the church isn't a building but are the believers themselves.

Rom 7:5  For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
Rom 7:16  If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
Romans 7:5 "...the Law made us have sinful desires..." (CEV)
Rom 7:16 "I agree that the law is good."(CEV)
The last two passages of scripture contradict each other.

1Co 1:21  For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
1 Corinthians 1:21 "...the foolish message we preach."(CEV)
If the message itself is foolish and not the action of preaching wouldn't that mean that the bible is undermining itself?

2Co 11:2  For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
2 Corinthians 11:2 turns jealous to "concerned"(CEV)

Gal 5:2  Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
Galatians 5:2 "I, Paul, promise you..."(CEV)
Here we have Paul breaking one of the New Testaments rules (see matt 5:34, Jam 5:12).

Eph 4:31  Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
Eph 4:31 change with all malice to "...ever be rude." (CEV)(2 Cor. 11:6)
Paul was know for being rude of speech.

Php 2:3  Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Philip 2:3 "Don't be jealous..."  (CEV)

1Ti 2:15  Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
1 Timothy 2:15 "But women will be saved by having children..."
The way this translations puts it, it sounds like they are teaching works salvation which is a false gospel (Rom 11:6).

Jud 1:12  These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;
Jude 1:12 removed twice

So in conclusion we see that there are many problems with the CEV version of the bible from the fact that it makes pride out to be good, eliminates messianic prophecies in psalms and proverbs, changes The verse in Daniel that supports pre-trib, has a works based salvation type doctrine in 1 Timothy, Solomon apparently didn't have enough understanding, and Job thinks that the wicked will have rest; contrary to other passages of scripture. Those are just some of the problems that this translation presents.

Well I hoped you enjoyed reading this! PLEASE SHARE!!!
