Today I want to talk about what exactly is blasphemy and what does the bible say about it and taking God's name in vain. To blaspheme is to speak evil against God, You take God's name in vain when you say it for no purpose or irreverently.
Not taking God's name in vain is one of the ten commandments (Exo 20:7, Deut 5:11). Blasphemy should never be heard out of a Christian's mouth (Col 3:8). Not only that but our behavior/actions should never be such as to give a reason for others to blaspheme (2 Sam 12:14, Rom 2:23-24, 1 Tim 6:1, Tit 2:5).
In the Old Tesament it (blasphemy) was punishable by death (see Lev 24). While in the New Testament we see Paul delivering 2 Men over to Satan so they might repent of this evil deed (1 Tim 1:20).
An example from the bible of blasphemy is when Sennacherib King of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem in order to persuade the people to surrender. They tried to convince the people of Jerusalem that because the gods of other lands could not deliver their people out of the King of Assyria and his father's hands so the Lord won't be able to either. Oh where they wrong. The angel of the Lord smote one hundred and eighty five thousand Assyrians, and their king was slain by his own sons while worshiping in the house of his god (2 Kin 18,19, 2 Cho 32, Isa 36,37).
Two examples of people who were falsly accused of blasphemy in the bible is Naboth (1 Kin 21:8-13) and Jesus (Joh 10:33). One of the worst sins you can commit is Blaspheming against the Holy Spirit, it so serious that you cannot ever be forgiven (Mat 12:31-32, Mar 3:29, Luk 12:10).
In Conclusion, although we can expect such behavior from the lost world (Psa 74:18, Psa 139:20) we as believers are to be different.
Here are a Few More verses for you to consider.
