The Message Bible (Why It's a Mess) updated

Do you know which verse corruptions these images are depicting? (omit the top lightning strike, i removed that verse).

Scripture quotations marked MSG are taken from The Message, copyright © 1993, 2002, 2018 by Eugene H. Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress. All rights reserved. Represented by Tyndale House Publishers.

Well hello again viewers, for today's article I will be exposing Eugene Peterson's the message. The message bible is a paraphrase when came out in pieces from 1993 to 2002. Now a paraphrase Isn't a literal word for word translation, therefore we shouldn't expect it to match bibles such as the kjv or even the NIV exactly. If you have been a reader of my material for some time. You may have noticed that I tend to focus on bible verses that have a change in meaning. This will be no different. As this will be one if not the last articles that I publish on the bible version issue, I decided to take the time to color the verses (yet again) for your reading convenience.

If I do decide to cover another translation it will probably be something like 10 verses the KJV may have mistranslated. Don't get me wrong I believe the KJV is probably the best English translation out there but my stance on it being 100 % inerrant has changed from complete certainty to it may have some errors, but I digress. Back to the topic at hand. I estimate there are about 50 to 80 verses to cover here with that said I hope you guys enjoy this in depth post on the message bible. As usual KJV verses will be in blue while the translation I will be exposing in red.

Gen 3:17  And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
Genesis 3:17-19 "...painful as having babies..." (MSG)
Working is Painful but not that much.

Gen 26:8  And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.
Gen 26:8 sporting changed to "fondling"(MSG)
Not very Kid friendly! Also not the Same meaning e.g. Pro 26:19

Gen 28:12  And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
Gen 28:10-12 "stairway"  (MSG)

Gen 37:4  And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
Gen 37:4 "...wouldn't even speak to..."(MSG)
Change in meaning

Exo 4:25  Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.
Exodus 4:24-26  "...touched Moses' member..."(MSG)
That so could be taken the wrong way.

Num 4:6  And shall put thereon the covering of badgers' skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof.
Numbers 4:5-6 "...dolphin skin..."(MSG)
Different Animal.

Num 16:32  And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.
Num 16:31-33"...all the human beings connected with..."(MSG)
contradiction see (Num 26:11)

Deu 16:22  Neither shalt thou set thee up any image; which the LORD thy God hateth.
Deuteronomy 16:21-22  "...fertility Asherah trees ... phallic sex pillars..." (MSG)

Deu 17:20  That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.
Deu 17:18-20 "...making up his own versions..."(MSG)
He just adds these words to scripture; an obvious attack on the KJV.

Jos 2:10  For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
Joshua 2:8-11  "...holy curse..."(MSG)
holy=good curse=bad, an oxymoron.

Jdg 4:21  Then Jael Heber's wife took a nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died.
Jdg 4:21 "...he convulsed and died."(MSG)
Where in the text does it say that he convulsed?

Jdg 9:9  But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
Jdg 9:7-9 "...glory to gods and men..."(MSG)

Jdg 12:14  And he had forty sons and thirty nephews, that rode on threescore and ten ass colts: and he judged Israel eight years.
Jdg 12:13-15 "...thirty grandsons..."(MSG)
Wrong type of relative.

Jdg 15:4  And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails.
Jdg 15:4-5 "...jackals..."(MSG)
Wrong animal.

Jdg 15:16  And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.
Jdg 15:14-16 "...company."(MSG)
So how many men did Samson slay?

1Sa 15:23  For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
1 Samuel 15:22-23 "...Not doing what God tells you is far worse than fooling around in the occult..."(MSG)
Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft it doesn't mean worse than.

2Sa 5:24  And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.
2 Samuel 5:23-24 "...grove of sacred trees..."(MSG)
Where did the word sacred come from?

1Ki 22:24  But Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near, and smote Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?
1 Kings  22:24 "...punched...in the nose..."(MSG)
Not the cheek.

2Ch 31:1  Now when all this was finished, all Israel that were present went out to the cities of Judah, and brake the images in pieces, and cut down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.
2 Chronicles 31:1 "...sex-and-religion shrines..."(MSG)
These passages are missing the word groves. This is important because it shows that groves are in connection with idolatry and is useful in showing people the truth that Christmas is idolatry.

Ezr 3:12  But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy:
Ezr 3:13  So that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people: for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off.
Ezra 3:11-13 "...wept loudly for joy..."(MSG)
No. Just No. You got weeping and you got shouting aloud for joy, don't combine them.

Neh 2:2  Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,
Nehemiah 2:2 "...more agitated..."(MSG)
Different emotion.

Est 2:18  Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state of the king.
Esther 2:17-18  "...proclaimed a holiday..."(MSG)
Do men have authority to make their own "holidays"?

Est 7:8  Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the bed whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.
Esther 7:7-8 "...all the blood drained from Haman's face..."(MSG)
How did he get this rendering from they covered Haman's face?

Pro 3:22  So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.
Proverbs 3:21-26 "...keep you fit and attractive..."(MSG)

Pro 12:4  A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.
Pro 12:4 "...frigid woman is cancer..."(MSG)

Pro 14:1  Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.
Pro 14:1 "...Sir fool..."(MSG)
A change in gender.

Pro 18:22  Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.
Pro 18:22  "...good spouse..."(MSG)
Ok Disney. The text doesn't say good spouse it just say's wife indicating that you should be grateful even if you spouse isn't all that and a bag of potato chips.

Ecc 1:1  The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
Ecclesiastes 1:1  the Preacher changed to "the Quester"(MSG)

Ecc 2:8  I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.
Ecc 2:4-8 "...voluptuous maidens for my bed."(MSG)
Even if that is what the text was implying, this rendering isn't as poetic or kid friendly.

Ecc 7:28  Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
Ecc 7:26-29 "...I didn't find one man or woman..."(MSG)
Opposite meaning.

Son 2:4  He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.
Song of Solomon  2:3-4 "...his eyes feasted on me!(MSG)

Son 3:3  The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?
3:1-4 "...I wanted my lover in the worst way..."(MSG)

Son 4:6  Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense.
4:6-7 "The sweet, fragrant curves of your body, the soft, spiced contours of your flesh Invite me, and I come. I stay until dawn breaths its light and night slips away..."(MSG)
Ok then, I don't really know what to say about these verses except they're coming on a little strong.

Son 4:12  A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.
4:8-15 "...Body and soul, you are paradise..."(MSG)
Are you sure this is a Christian verse instead of a Mormon or Islamic one?

Isa 4:1  And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.
Isa 4:1 "...Make us pregnant..."(MSG)
I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that these seven women are referring to the seven churches, we the church are the bride of Christ and are called by his name.

Isa 7:20  In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard.
Isa 7:20 "...genitals..."(MSG)
Wrong part of anatomy.

Isa 19:18  In that day shall five cities in the land of Egypt speak the language of Canaan, and swear to the LORD of hosts; one shall be called, The city of destruction.
Isa 19:19  In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the LORD.
Isa 19:18 "...honored with the title 'City of the Sun.'"
Sun worship is an abominable practice to God, why would that be considered an honour?

Mic 3:5  Thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that make my people err, that bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and he that putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him.
Micah 3:5  "...their 'God bless you' turns into..."(MSG)
(I will not type the whole thing out). This verse has God sinning.

Dan 2:34  Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.
Daniel 2:31-36"...invisible hand..."(MSG)
Just because something cannot be seen doesn't mean it's not there or doesn't exist. Therefore without hands is not the same as invisible hand.

Dan 8:9  And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.
Dan 8:8-12 "...lovely Palestine"(MSG)

Jon 1:1  Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
Jonah 1:1-2 "One day long ago..."(MSG)
In a galaxy far away.

Nah 2:2  For the LORD hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches.
Nahum 2:2 "God has restored the Pride of Jacob,...He's been to hell and back."(MSG)
No he didn't and no they haven't.

Zec 13:6  And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.
Zechariah 13:4-6 "...And so where did you get that black eye?'
they'll say, 'I ran into a door at a friend's house.'"
(This completely destroys the prophetic reference to Jesus)

Mal 3:6  For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
Malachi 3:6 "...I haven't changed..."(MSG)
This implies that he could.

Mat 5:29  And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
Mat 5:30  And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
Matthew 5:29-30 hell changed to "moral trash pile" and "the dump"(MSG)

Mat 25:51  Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Mat 24:48-51 "...end up in the dump with the hypocrites, out in the cold shivering, teeth chattering."(MSG)
Hell is hot not cold.

Mar 14:25  Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
Mark 14:25 "'I'll not be drinking wine again until..."(MSG)

Joh 19:29  Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
John 19:29-30 "...took the wine..."(MSG)
Contradiction!!

Luk 12:46  The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
Luke 12:42-46 "...put him back in the kitchen peeling potatoes."(MSG)
Way to diminish the threat of hell.

Act 19:4  Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
Acts 19:4 "...If you've been baptized in John's baptism, you're ready now for the real thing, for Jesus."
(MSG)
Implying that you need water baptism.

Rom 8:35  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Rom 8:31-39 "...not hatred...not even the worst sins listed in scripture..." (MSG)
(see 1 John 3:15, Mark 3:29, Rev 14:9-10, Rev 22:19)

Rom 15:13  Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
Rom 15:7-13 "...God of green hope..."(MSG)

1Co 11:16  But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
1 Corinthians 11:13-16 "....All of God's churches see it this way..."(MSG)
You have just totally flipped the meaning of this verse!

2Co 12:20  For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults:
2 Cor 12:20-21 "...jealousy,...taking sides, angry words..."(MSG)

Gal 3:27  For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Galatians 3:25-27 "...Your baptism in Christ was not just washing..."(MSG)
Baptism in Christ occurs before one is water baptized.

Col 2:12  Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
Colossians 2:11-15 "...Going under the water..."(MSG)

1Th 2:20  For ye are our glory and joy.
1 Thessalonians 2:17-20 "...pride..."(MSG)
Like many other modern translations the message uses the word pride/proud in a postive sense. This sends mixed messages, is pride a sin or not. In truth the bible is clear that it is.

Pro_8:13  The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
Pro_11:2  When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
Pro_13:10  Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.
Pro_14:3  In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.
Pro_16:18  Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Pro_29:23  A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

Tit 1:7  For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
Titus 1:5-9 "...responsible for the affairs in God's house..."(MSG)
A verse that implies God's house is a man-made building.

1Pe 3:21  The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
1 Pet 3:19-22 "...The waters of baptism do that for you."(MSG)
Water Baptism doesn't save!

Rev 8:13  And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!
Revelation 8:13 angel changed to "eagle"(MSG)

Rev 13:1  And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
Rev 13:1-2  "...the Dragon stood on the shore..."(MSG)
Switches John with the dragon.

So in conclusion, I would have to encourage my readers to avoid making the passion translation their primary bible at all cost! I can't make you not read it, but with as many problems at this translation has, I would say it is folly to continue to memorize & belief  these very dangerous doctrines that this translation promotes. I will just recite 8 false teachings and/or problematic text that we have covered in this study. Hell is a cold place, Water baptism saves, you should be proud, man's labor is as painful as having babies, Song of Solomon isn't as kid friendly in this translation, obedient Christians will be good looking, Zechariah's prophecy destroyed, Sin won't separate you from God. Thus concludes my post on this bible.
