The Dark Side Of Dragonball

In today's article I will be exposing one of the most popular anime of all time. I am talking about Dragonball. The reason I have decided to make this post is because I used to be a really big fan of dragonball and that's putting it lightly. I practically worshipped the show before I was a christian in my teenage years and even watched it well into my 20's. It was when I realized that I have made an Idol out of it I decided to give it up. So now I will be going over some of the material that was presented in the comics and anime that as a christian I am glad I gave it up. If you love DBZ but are a christian I hope that this material will be an eye opener for you.

The Pilaf Saga

The very first saga in the dragonball mythology, it is evident from the very start that dragonball has material that is not suitable for christian audiences. There are several instances throughout the dragonball series where kid goku is naked,  his private parts are completly exposed. There are scenes in this saga that shows bulma bathing with her chests exposed, goku taking off her underwear while she sleeps, bulma flipping off the villain and flashing master roshie.

This is supposed to be a kid/teenager show and yet it is exposing children to nudity. The bible is clear that to look with lust is adultery, therefore it is unwise for a christian to watch this because it can lead to lust.

Goku - An Antichrist

An antichrist is someone who not only opposes christ but also can be seen as a replacement for him. On the outside it seems like Goku has some very God-like characteristics. Some examples include: he rides on a cloud (Isa 19:1), he came from heaven (Joh 3:13), his limitless power (Rev 19:6), his aura of light (Psa 104:2), comes back from the dead (Mat 28:7), and to prove my point further in the battle against frieza Goku has a blasphemous I AM (Exo 3:14, Joh 8:58) speech where he claims the same properties of Christ. I mean look at this "You can destroy planets, but you can never destroy what I am, friend (1Tim 6:16). "I am the hope of the universe (Psa 42:5, Psa 43:5, Jer 17:7,1 Thes 1:3), i am the answer to all living things that cry out for peace, I am protector of the innocent, I am the light in the darkness (Joh 1:7-9, Joh 8:12), I am truth (Joh 14:6).

However we see that inwardly Goku is not very christ-like in his behaviour. He loves fighting, which God hates those that love violence (Psa 11:5). He doesn't provide for his family's needs, he doesn't work. Those that don't provide for their own are worse than infidels (1Tim 5:8). Speaking of violence, that seems to be the main theme of dragonball.

World Tournament Saga

During this saga we are introduced to a new character, launch! She is a schizophrenic and when she sneezes she turns into a gun toting blonde who has been known to shoot at the hero's. This is used as a comic relief but this mental illness (demonic possession in reality) is nothing to laugh at.

Fortune Teller Baba Saga

The name says it all. In order to find the last dragonball Gokau and pals seek the aid of a witch to help them find it. Consulting those with familiar spirits is strictly condemned in the bible, as is necromancy which is also seen in this saga.
What's more is in this saga we see the Dragon god Shenron (represents Satan) being summoned to resurrect upa's dad (2Cor 4:4, Rev 20:2). Shenron resurrects fallen hero's quite frequently in dragonball. We know that Jesus is the resurrection and the life (Joh 11:25), not Satan.

Other Important Points Regarding Dragonball

Another thing that I think that I should mention is that Goku's ultimate rival during the middle of dragonball is Tien shinhan, Tien is chinese for a supreme power that reigns over lesser gods. Tien seems to have a new age/hinduism feel to him in that he has been seen in an meditative state where he is levitating and he has a third eye which is reminiscent of the whole hindu chakra system.

The guardian of the earth that is introduced near the end of the series is called Kami which is the name of the gods of the Shinto religion. This being possess a man during the final world tournament when he faces off against piccolo. The archvillian of the last tournament is known as ma junior, "ma" meaning demon. It's interesting how this demon is later said to be an alien called a namekian in DBZ. In real life however it's just the opposite, devils portray themselves as aliens to those who do not know the truth.

The ending theme song also has some very disturbing lyrics as well, especially the unbiblical "believing in yourself sets you free" and "magic can happen to you" (as if that's a good thing). It's Jesus that makes you free (Joh 8:36) and magic is bad.

Dragon Ball Z

I don't have alot to say about the first half of DBZ that i haven't already covered already other than these few points. 1. The introduction of alien races in the series kinda give it an evolutionary, old universe feel to it. 2. The introduction of the anti hero concept into the series aka piccolo and vegeta (the proud prince). The bible says woe to those that call evil good (Isa 5:20). 3. The gratuitous nudity of maran in the garlic jr saga (she wasn't completely naked but the swimsuit left little to the imagination.

Cell Games Saga

This series introduces a new character into the mix, hercule. He is otherwise known as Mr. Satan. What's really disturbing is how this character is admired by the whole world as a savior figure as the one who defeated cell and majin buu. He didn't really but has deceived the world into thinking he did. Like the devil he is a liar (Joh 8:44). His daughter Videl is an anagram for devil, and his grand daughter is named after the pagan god Pan. One of the hero's (Gohan) talks to his deceased father (necromancy) during the final showdown with cell. The last thing that i want to mention for this part is in the Bio-Broly movie trunks flips him the bird. This is something any christian parent should want to hide from their children's eyes.

Majin Buu Saga

The show finally shows it's true colors in this last story ark of DBZ. Here we have Gohan and Videl riding in a car marked 666 an obvious reference to the mark of the beast in Rev 13:18 right before and after commercial breaks. The character supreme kai also known as Lord of lords (Rev 17:14) is a relative weakling when compared to the main characters, and majin buu turns out to be a good guy in the end, jinn is a devil in arabic. The ending where most of the whole earth raises their hands to support Mr. Satan was just so cringeworthy and offensive to me as a christian.

Dragonball GT

For this segment i just wanted to mention three characters that stuck out to me when I thought about creating this article. First there is dolltalkie, his name implies what he does, talks to dolls. He in fact turns people into dolls. there is this scene where he turns the girl pan into a doll and was about to undress her. This borders on pedophilia and i find it quite distasteful to say the least. Then there is baby. An alien who has the ability to possess the hero's bodies and control them. This sounds alot like demonic possession to me. Then appropriately the last character of GT that i wanted to mention was Sin/Omega shenron the most powerful evil dragon. This character is very similar to the nonfictional Satan. Lucifer says that he will be like the most high in Isa 14 and Omega is one of the names for God (Rev 1:8).

Dragon Ball Super / Conclusion

I personally haven't watched a whole lot of DBZ super, just some clips from youtube but I do know enough to stay away from it. For one Goku and vegeta have what's called a god mode now and the bible teaches us that false gods are devils and that God wants us to flee from idolatry. This would rule out us liking Goku anymore since he is know referred to as a god.

What's more is that two of the main characters of DBS is Whis and Beerus, who's names are derived from Whiskey and Beer. Plus Whis shows signs of being a homosexual. The final point that i want to make is Dragonball super is loaded with gods of destruction and an entire multiverse. A multiverse is just a pathetic attempt to try to explain how our universe got here without God. It's a simple fact that the multiverse theory is illogical because an infinite amount of past causes is impossible.

In conclusion Christians should avoid watching dragonball z for many reasons including but not limited to nudity, witchcraft, violence, idolatry, blasphemy, hand sign profanity, and bad role models.

  2. Ok so first of all everything from the original Dragon Ball i crossed out. I don't see how Shenron is the devil if he's actually more of a servant. Goku being naked is kind of a stretch but it was acceptable in the place of origin for the show. Launch has a brain problem. I hate when people say literally everything is demonic possession. People were told to avoid magic because it was from the devil. Nothing here says Baba's fortunetelling was from the devil. I think the bible's "violence" was attacks intended to harm people. Goku only intends to harm the evil. Also Goku didn't say he was Jesus. He actually was the hope to their universe, mind you, a fictional universe that Jesus is not a part of. The bible never says if you make an fictional universe there has to be a fictional Jesus. Now as for Dragon Ball Z, I don't even know what your logic is when you say a toddler in a swimsuit gives a lot to imagine when there's no sexual implication. Satans name isn't derived from the Satan of the Bible but rather from the radical names of Japanese wrestlers and Videl, Pan and the 666 were just meant to go with the name bringing stuff from one Satan to another unrelated guy named Satan. Supreme Kai isn't meant to have relation to God and what's wrong with a bad person turning good? As for the Satan shouting while it had no reference to the Biblical, nonfictional Satan it also kinda sounded offensive too so I guess we agree there. Also the middle finger. There wasn't any need for that. In haven't watched Dragon Ball GT so I'll skip that but as for Super, what's wrong with beer and whisky. We can drink it but we cant get drunk. And Whis isn't a homosexual, far from it. The angels are meant to be asexual. And Goku's "god" form doesn't mean an idol or god to praise, it means a power god. A god in the Dragon Ball world Goku's god means a being with lots of power. Also our God isn't a part of that universe so even if Goku was really a god that wouldn't do anything since he's not a false idol since our God isn't there. Anyways that's my opinion on it. You may have your reasons for thinking this but it really isn't satanic/demonic. I'm a devout Catholic Christian and I enjoy the show. It's about overcoming bad and Goku has a fine line between good and bad. Good day.

  3. I appreciate you stopping by and taking the time to read my article "Godchild". I will be more than happy to address your arguments here, I hope it won't make you too offended. 1. I already showed how the devil of the bible is referred to as a god and dragon and shenron is a dragon god. He comes from dragonballs with appear as a circle with a star(s) in it. The Devil does grant wishes though, how do you think magic works? Goku's nudism being acceptle in Japan is irrelevant. The bible teaches us to be modest in our apparal, it's a sin to go around in the nude in front of people. Just because Japan thinks it's ok doesn't make it right. As for launch, Jesus cast devils out of lunaticks therefore curing them, anyone who manifest similiarly to the demoniacs in the bible are called devil possessed. jung and freud do not trump the bible. Magic is from the devil, if your a true Christian you would believe this. Baba's fortune telling was from the devil because it's implied because that's how it works in real life. Not to mention devilman is in her roster. Goku can't say anything he's just a cartoon, his creator's implied that he was an antichrist by giving him Jesus' names and attributes. Fictional universes come from the mind and imaginations of men, God can see inside men's hearts and imaginations therefore God is operating in every universe fictional or otherwise. Men are judged not just on their words and actions but their thoughts as well. Therefore fictional universes are subject to the law of God. We are to bring our thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ and we also must cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God (2 Cor 10:5). You made a strawman when referring to the girl in the swimsuit. She was easily a late teen or early 20 year old and hear buttocks and chest was clearly exposed continuously for a long period of time. You expect any thinking person to believe that Satan, Videl (devil), Pan, and 666 were just in their by coincidence? It was clearly done on purpose, the people of the dbz world were created to worship satan as does most people of this world do. The Graphic novel calls the Supreme Kai Lord of lords, that is Jesus' title. If you give that title to a cartoon character that you created that makes them an idol. What's wrong with a bad person turning good? Although vegeta doesn't go around killing people anymore he still is very proud and is a narcassist aka selfish to the core. No gods are real except in the hearts of men saving for the devils that manifest as them. God wants our entire allegiance he will not share his glory with another, even a fictional person. I see where you are coming from since I used to be just like you in this regard. Goku is indeed an idol in the hearts of many young adults and children because Dragon ball is very popular/highly esteemed.Luk 16:15  And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.  That's all for now. later.
