Murder & The Bible

In today's article we will be going over the topic of murder in the bible. We will be looking at who committed murder, where does God command not to murder, and what are the consequences of murdering someone.

Don't Do It!

First let's find out where in Scripture does it tell us not to kill. If we look at the ten commandments thou shalt not kill is listed right under the command to honor our parents (Exo 20:13, Deu 5:17).
We also see that God forbids child sacrifice. (Lev 18:21, Deu 18:10), and commands people to not shed innocent blood (Jer 22:3). This command is not only reiterated in the New Testament
(Luk 18:20, Rom 13:9, 1Pe 4:15) but is pushed up a notch as being angry with your brother without a cause is a sin (Mat 5:21 -22).

Who Done It?

So who in the bible is actually listed as committing this sin? One of the most well know murderers in the bible is Cain of coarse, who killed his brother (Gen 4:8). Then there is the account of meek Moses slaying the Egyptian for smiting his brethren (Exo 2:12).
An Amalekite claims to have Slain King Saul when he found him fallen in battle, though he might have just lied about killing saul (2Sa 1:10).  Rechab and Baanah murdered Ishbosheth (Saul's son) when he was laying upon his own bed (2 Sam 4:7). Even King David brought great evil upon his house because he committed adultery and caused Uriah to be slain in battle (2 Sam 12:9-10).

Then there is King Ahaz who made his son/children to pass through the fire (2Ki 16:3, 2Ch 28:3).  King Mannasseh was also known for shedding innocent blood as well (2Ki 24:3-4). Then there is the instance of King Amon, who was slain in his own house by his servants (2Ch 33:24). The perfect man Job had his servants slain by the Sabeans (Job 1:15). The Evil king Herod had all the babies killed in Bethlehem and it's coasts from the age of two and under (Mat 2:16). Lastly we had the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit killing the two witnesses (Rev 11:7).

Facing the Consequences

Now let's take a look at the punishment that results of committing this horrible deed. We see way back in the book of Genesis that God has those that slay men will in turn be slain by men (Gen 9:5 -6). We see in the book of Exodus that premeditated murder carries a much higher penalty than those that were not (Exo 21:13-14). Those that had servants were to be punished if they murdered their workers, unless they survived a day or two (Exo 21:20). If the owner of an ox murdered someone both the ox and the owner were to be put to death, that is if he knew his beast had that kind of temper and he didn't keep it in. He could however pay some money to save his life (Exo 21:29-30).

Giving your seed to Molech in those days carried with it the death penalty (Lev 20:2), unlike today where Abortion is legal in America. Hitmen are cursed by God if their targets are innocent (Deu 27:25).
We see in Psa 55:23 that the life expectancy of bloody/deceitful men is less than half of what it would've been. Proverbs teaches us that men who desire to rob and kill others are in fact laying in wait for their own lives (Pro 1:18 -19). It is our iniquity that separates us from God, the reason he doesn't hear our prayers is because of our sin (Isa 59:1-3). King Jehoiakim didn't have a very nice funeral since he shed innocent blood among doing other things (Jer 22:17-19).

Wee see that God scattered Israel among the heathen as a result of their wickedness, including the shedding of blood (Eze 22:12 -15).  God also said that He would make mount Seir desolate and it's cities waste because they shed the blood of the children of Israel (Eze 35:3 -5). The Prophet Hosea tells us that the land will mourn and the inhabitants thereof will languish because of their sins, one of the sins he list is killing (Hos 4:2 -3).

Barabbas was cast him prison for murder, as well as sedition (Luk 23:25). The book of Romans list a bunch of despicable things including murder, and tells us that those which commit such things are worthy of death (Rom 1:29-32). Murders is also listed as one of the works of the flesh and those
that do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God (Gal 5:21).

Finally we see the end result of the unrepentant murder is to be cast into the lake of fire (Rev 21:8). This is further supported by 1Jn 3:15 when it tells us that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them. This passage also teaches us that you don't have to go out and physically kill someone to be a murderer, you just have to hate them.

A Little Bit More On Murder

We see in the Old Testament that there were cities that were appointed as places of refuge for those who accidentally killed someone(Num 35, Jos 20:1-6). It's bad enough when somebody kills a stranger, but when a parent slays their own child to be sacrificed to some devil, some pagan deity, it is an outrageous act. Yet evolutionists will claim that morals are relative, that they are determined by the society. Do they really expect me to believe that child sacrifice is OK just because pagan societies deemed it acceptable? No it's not OK! God doesn't like it either. Slaying innocent blood is evil period. (Deu 12:31, Psa 106:37 -39, Isa 57:5, Jer 7:31, Jer 32:35, Eze 16:20-21, Eze 23:37).

When we look throughout the bible we see that God sends prophets to warn the people to turn from their sin so that God wouldn't have to pour out his wrath. Israel however ignores their prophets and kills them instead (Neh 9:26, Mat 23:30-35).
The bible also records woman devouring their own children because of the dire strait they are in. This is because they have turned their back on God (Lam 2:20, Lam 4:10, Lev 26:27-29, Deu 28:53). We learn in Mar 7:20-23 that murder comes from within, out of our heart and it is one of the things that defiles people.
We have the faithful Martyr Stephen being murdered in Acts 7:59.

In conclusion murder is just one more sin that separates us from God and must be repented of. It is one of the things that separates the sons of God from the children of the devil. Murderers such as the Jesuits and Islamic terrorist are of their father of the devil, this is evident because they seek to do his lust (Joh 8:40-44, Joh 16:2 -3, Jas 4:1-3). As Christians we are called to love people, not hate them. Instead of seeking to harm others or get revenge, we are told to forgive and to look to the needs of the less fortunate
(Luk 9:53-56, Joh 8:3-7, Gal 2:10).
