The Importance of Chastity in Worship

In this post i will stress the importance of separating the feelings that are exclusive to the husband and wife here on earth from the feelings we have toward our Creator. While Wiccan's believe sex is okay during their worship practices and Hindu's and Pagans may choose to worship an idol's reproductive organs, the Living and True God of Christianity seriously does not want worship in this way! Here are many scriptural clues to send my point.

In Gen 3:10 we have Adam hiding from God because he was naked. When Israel were preparing to meet the Lord they were instructed to abstain from sex with their wives (Exo 19:11  -15). The Lord instructed the Priest not to go up steps to his alter so that people wouldn't see their nakedness (Exo 20:26). Then there is the example of Israel becoming naked when they worshiped the molten calf  (Exo 32:24  -25).

Men were considered unclean until the evening when their seed of copulation went from them and were told to wash; this was so they wouldn't defile God's tabernacle and cause them to die.(Lev 15:16, Lev 15:31). The children of Israel were also given very specific instructions to keep their camp clean so that the Lord wouldn't turn away from it (Deu 23:10 -14). There was also a restriction on eating hallowed bread, if the men didn't keep themselves from women (1Sa 21:4).

Jesus himself taught that men didn't marry in heaven but were as the angels (Mar 12:25). We are to worship God in Spirit and Truth
(Joh 4:24, Php 3:3). The New Testament instructs us to follow the Spirit and not the flesh (Rom 8:5 -8, Rom 8:12  -13). Husbands and Wives were instructed to abstain from sex for a time for the purpose of prayer and fasting (1Co 7:5). 1 Cor 7:34 shows the difference between a wife and virgin.

We also learn from Paul's epistle that the flesh and Spirit are opposed to each other and this conflict prevents us from doing things that we otherwise would. So we have Paul instructing us to walk after the Spirit so that we don't fulfill the lust of the flesh (Gal 5:16 -17). Additionally we are to possess our vessel in sanctification and honor, for we know it is God's will that we abstain from fornication (1Th 4:3 -7).
The Apostle Peter warns us to abstain from fleshly lust which war against the soul (1 Pe 2:11).  He also tells us that the Lord is going to punish those that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness
(2Pe 2:9 -10). We are instructed not to love the things of this world and that includes the lust of the eyes and the lust of the flesh (1Jn 2:15  -16).

So in conclusion we can see that God wishes us to separate the clean from the unclean and to be chaste when worshiping him. So we should see a stark contrast between the true worship of the Creator and the worship which is rendered to idol/devils, in that many pagans worship the reproductive organs while Christians do not.
