When Secular Entertainment Is Taken Too Far

In today's posts we will be covering a religion which is based on the extremely popular movie series Star Wars. I will then go over why we as Christians are not to mimic the world in this aspect by making an idol out of the stuff that we watch.

The Religion that I'm referring to is of coarse Jediism. Adherents to this belief maintain that the universe is held together by what's known as the Force and that this Force flows through every material thing. The Jedi knights are the good guys and they are capable of controlling this Force so to speak. Jediism seems to be a mixture of both Buddhism and Taoism with a pinch of medieval chivalry thrown in.

So what's the problem with a few nerds dressing up in long robes and pretending to fight off an army of storm troopers with a plastic light saber? The problem is when you take Television shows too seriously and they become a major part of your life, you then run the risk of turning these things into an idol. The mere fact that this has become a religion proves that it is already became an idol in the hearts of many. Instead of going to the Bible for their morals they have what's referred to as a Jedi Code.

This reminds me of my younger days as a teenager, back then I wasn't a Christian and I idolized a show called Dragonball z. It was practically all I thought about! I had Dragonball Cards, Dragonball figures, and all the Episodes/ Movies as well. Once I became a Christian and then realized that I made a god out of it, I got rid of all my DBZ paraphernalia.

There are several bible passages we can derive from scripture to show why we shouldn't Idolize Tv shows and Movies. Here are just a few points. We are to love God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind (not TV shows) Mark 12:30. We are not supposed to be conformed to this world (Rom 12:2). We are not supposed to love the things of the world, which includes the lust of the flesh/eyes and the pride of life (1 Joh 2:15-16).

So in conclusion while it may not be a sin to watch a television show now and then, we must still careful not to place too much importance on what we watch.
